“Sicily in Cinema”: a festival dedicated to the seventh art and focused on “Sicilianity”

Now in its second edition, “Sicily in Cinema” shines a spotlight on the theme of “Sicilianity”, continuing the journey initiated last year with its first edition.

This year, a new location has been chosen with the intention, as expressed by the president of the Events and Culture Association, Rossella Scannavino, to make it itinerant, thus bringing a different kind of cinema to the people of Sicilian towns, who are involved on a rotating basis.

According to Rossella Scannavino, it’s important to promote less common art forms, such as short films and documentaries, to introduce them to a wider audience.

The film selections are of high quality and value, curated by the film expert Beppe Manno, who has been promoting independent cinema across Sicily and beyond for years now.

The first event of “Sicily in Cinema” is scheduled for Friday, April 19th, at 8:30 PM, featuring a series of short films that tell stories of great depth and cultural as well as sociological significance.

Despite their brevity, the short films in the festival are rich in content, with images that evoke strong emotional, evocative, and symbolic effects in the audience.

Among the showcased works are: a short film by Davide Vigore, presented at the Venice Film Festival, addressing an important and ever-relevant social issue like migration; Nora Trebastoni’s short film, shot between Mazara del Vallo and Marsala, promising to keep the audience on the edge of their seats until the end; and the comedy by director Giuseppe Carleo, a piece that won a significant award at the “Venice Film Festival” and features an all-Sicilian cast, including Miriam Dalmazio.

The second event will take place on Saturday, April 20th, at the same time, featuring two documentary films: the first by Clelia Parisi, which received great acclaim at the Cannes Film Festival, telling the story of the esteemed painter and sculptor Antonio Santacroce.

Following that, the work of Lorenzo Daniele and Alessandra Cilio will be screened, winner at the “Rovereto Archaeological Film Festival,” focusing on women: photographer Letizia Battaglia, writer Simonetta Agnello Horby, actress Donatella Finocchiaro, and other accomplished Sicilian professionals, narrating the deep connection between their lives and the territories where they were born and raised.

This documentary gives voice to these women who share a passion and love for their roots.
