History of NewSicily
The NewSicily news portal was born from an initiative by Nicola Scardina and Gabriele Vernengo, both journalistic collaborators.
The idea to create the portal originated from a chance meeting between the two in the spring of 2020, in the period immediately following the end of the lockdown in Italy, imposed by the government to counter the advance of the Coronavirus.
In those terrible and unforgettable days when rhythms were strongly conditioned by the pandemic crisis, the two journalistic collaborators decided to combine their skills to create an information site through which to disseminate news regarding activities aimed at revitalizing Sicilian economic development.
The website project was developed, due to various delays, in just under a year, and with a very limited budget due to economic constraints.
The implementation phase of the project finally began with an enthusiasm never extinguished in the spring of 2021, after various video calls where the editorial line was addressed, and of course there was discussion regarding the name to be attributed to the site: the choice, made by vote, ended with the majority in favor of “NewSicily,” a contraction of the English words “News” and “Sicily.”
The site was published online on May 21, 2021, as a “horizontal” information portal, dedicated to various themes such as culture and society, economy, energy and environment, health and well-being, science and technology, with particular attention to startups which in recent years have represented a growing phenomenon in Sicily.
In its latest and current evolution, NewSicily presents itself as an English-language news bulletin dedicated to news from Sicily, to reach an even broader audience composed of Sicilian communities residing abroad and descendants of Sicilian immigrants from long ago, who have remained faithfully tied to the culture and traditions of the island.
The mission of NewSicily
A virtual space where, in addition to sharing news from Sicily, it is possible to tell stories of success, dreams to be realized, and a desire to make a difference by the best side of Sicily – that’s what NewSicily is all about.
NewSicily is born with the aim of communicating in an optimistic and confident perspective for the revival of the Sicilian economy, severely affected by the current pandemic crisis.
With the NewSicily.info portal, the goal is to provide a humble contribution to overcome a difficult phase of uncertainty, to encourage looking ahead with a more optimistic vision.
